The Trans and gender-diverse communities are starting to feel vulnerable, so let’s continue to work on making The Star a safe and inclusive place for everyone, esp., for trans and gender-diverse team members. Being able to co-lead a group of passionate and driven people is an absolute pleasure, and they are what fuelled me to keep going, even when it did get a little tough. Seeing a person’s growth and change since they affirmed has been remarkable and is the perfect story of how allowing people to be their authentic selves really does create a positive impact.
Queensland premier David Crisafulli said his interests were "not in Star, not in the people who sit around the corporate boardrooms, my interests are in the working people who are there in that facility". About 2,000 people work at Star's casino at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. The company employs 9,000 people across Queensland and New South Wales, with 3,000 in Brisbane, about 2,000 on the Gold Coast and 3,500 in Sydney, as well as about 400 corporate staff. Its shares plummeted by more than 15 per cent after the trading halt was lifted on Friday morning.
Buying a stake in the company won’t help Star’s precarious financial position. If he had been lined up or approached by the Star board as part of the rescue attempt, the company would need to have disclosed any deal or association. Mr Costello said it was more in the public interest to let the facility be sold off for "a shopping centre" than to prop up a failing casino with taxpayers' money. He said the public could have "no confidence" in a casino owner that had failed to disclose business dealings with organised crime figures.
